The cocktail was named after the French 75 millimeter field gun of 1897 which became the main heavy artillery of world war I. This recipe is the more memorable of two different drinks using the same name and will be a hit at your next party. There is some difference of opinion whether to use Gin or Cognac. I prefer gin in and think this is the truer version. This could also be made into punch form, but increase the recipe to a serving for 10 or 20.

2 oz of No 209 gin or Nolet’s
1 oz of fresh squeezed lemon juice
2 tsp of powdered sugar
Champaign for topping
Shake all ingredients except the champagne in a cocktail shaker with ice and pour into a flute glass. Top with champagne and stir gently. Garnish with a thin spiral of lemon peel.
